“Hierdie kęrel skryf gate oop in ons kollektiewe bewussyn..
The irreverent Rian Malan, award-winning journalist and writer of
'My Traitor's Heart' is releasing his debut CD 'Alien Inboorling'.
At this year's Oppikoppi, mouths were agape when he had his first
ever public performance - with many agreeing it was one of the
highlights of this important music festival.
Malan himself describes it as a collection of “suicide ballads, short
stories, Arthur Murray tangos and fragments of social commentary.”
Some of the songs are blatantly sinister and jocular, though still an
honest portrait of the collective fears, hopes and crushed dreams in
this country.
A self-taught musician who had barely touched a guitar since leaving
high school, Malan raised eyebrows earlier this year when eight or so
of his songs turned up on 'Stoomradio', the debut album from Radio Kalahari
Orkes. "I was shaken when RKO received rave views and established a cult
following. I thought, hey, this is lekker, and decided to see where else
Afrikaans music might take me.”
The album was produced by the legendary Lloyd Ross of Shifty Records,
who discovered the likes of James Phillips, Koos Kombuis, Johannes Kerkorrel,
Tananas and Vusi Mahlasela.
Dis rou, dis eerlik en dis 'n belewenis. Dis Rian Malan se 'Alien Inboorling'.
